Built in 1614 at the risk of the chief engineer and leader of the fortification of Brazil, Francisco de Frias da Mesquita (1603-1634). It consisted of a unified command, between 1624 and 1694, together with the Fort of Santo Antônio da Barra and the Fort of San Diogo, with which it crossed fires in the defense of the bar of the port of Vila Velha, landing place of the first grantee of the Captaincy ( Francisco Pereira Coutinho, 1536), the first governor-general (Tomé de Sousa, 1549) and the first of the Dutch Invasions of Brazil (Johan van Dorth, 1624). At the time of the latter, he was commander of the three squares Paulo Coelho de Vasconcelos (SOUZA, 1983: 170).
