Het dorp São Bento do Ameixial zou al in 1258 hebben bestaan, te oordelen naar de informatie van de eerste formo van Estremoz, met de naam Aldeia do Penedo.
Volgens Túlio Espanca werd de parochiekerk in het begin van de 16e eeuw gesticht als een eerbetoon aan de Orde van Avis, die in 1534 kerkelijk werd bezocht.

Het huidige uiterlijk is meer in overeenstemming met de 17e-eeuwse of 18e-eeuwse landelijke gebouwen van Alentejo, hoewel het de cilindrische buitenste hoekige torens van de pastorie behoudt die wijzen naar de Manuelijnse periode.
Het heeft twee laterale kruisen naar de hoofdingang, gemaakt in polychrome tegels die typerend zijn voor de zeventiende eeuw. Van artistiek belang is ook het toilet van de marmeren sacristie, met kransen van rollen met kronkelende, daterend van 1698.
