Historic monument, defensive fortress built as protection against pirates who penetrated Guatemalan territory along the Atlantic coast during the 16th century. It is one of the most important tourist attractions in the region, with facilities and services for tourists.



Maritime piracy led to the need to create a guardian at the exit and entry of ships in Izabal. So it was like building the Castillo de San Felipe.



The year 1560 marked the beginning of the Castle, when he began to build part of it to collect taxes. Then over time the construction and building has been expanding to be the building that we can visit today.



Over the years, the maritime activity in the area has decreased considerably and the Dulce River lost much of its economic importance and now the castle remains as a refuge, testimony of bygone times and tourist attraction. Within the tourist area, it was possible to find young Caribbean people who bring visitors, as well as friends from the place.





This tourist destination is approximately 3 hours from the capital of Guatemala.

To get to Castillo, take the Carretera al Atlántico, from eastern Guatemala and head to the department of Izabal. You will pass through El Progreso and Quiriguá.

Once in Izabal, crossing the Río Dulce bridge, you will find the signs that indicate the way to the castle.



Once inside the castle, it is possible to visit each of its parts because the restoration work has been extensive and successful. The view from the top of the tower is interesting. It also takes care of the boat boats around you.
