The first settlements we have reference to in Benalmádena date from the end of the Upper Paleolithic, as can be deduced from the remains found in some caves in the municipality / Cuevas del Toro, Los Botijos or La Zorrera).
The Phoenicians reached these shores in the 7th and 8th centuries BC. giving rise to an exchange of cultures that focuses on agricultural techniques, livestock and trade. There are some remains of Phoenician settlements in the municipality.
Later there were Roman settlements of which there are numerous vestiges in the coastal areas of Benalmádena. Of special relevance are the ruins of a salting factory in the Benal-Roma area and the remains of other villas and facilities in the Torremuelle and Capellanía areas.
archaeological
At this time Ibn-Al-Baytar (1197, 1248) was born, an illustrious botanist and doctor as well as a relevant personality of the time. Also from this period are the beacon towers that line the coast of Benalmádena and whose mission was to be a point of surveillance against the attacks of pirates that lurked along the coast.
Ibn-Al-BaytarAfter a time when various cultures passed through Benalmádena, the arrival of the Arabs took place, to whom the municipality is named. It is attributed to the same Arabic sound ´´Ben-al.Madina´´ which means ´´Sons of the mines´´. This may be due to the existence of a series of mines in the area from which iron ore and, above all, ocher were extracted, since Phoenician times.
After the reconquest by the Christians there is a dark period in the history of our town since this area is practically depopulated due to the fear of the locals to the attacks coming from the sea. On several occasions the repopulation of the municipality is sought, but all of them with little or no success.
In these years there are systematic destruction of what were once the fortifications and the castle of Benalmádena that occupied the current enclosure of the Wall of Benalmádena Pueblo) so that practically no physical vestige of the time has survived to this day.
Benalmádena is located in southern Europe, on the Mediterranean shore and in the center of the Costa del Sol, one of the main tourist destinations in the world. Map

Montana
Benalmádena is very influenced by the mountain since, as such, its first population center was born and it has also been an element that has conditioned the entire life and development of the municipality. The Benalmádena mountain is not high, the highest and most significant levels are the Cerro del castillejo (967 m.), The Cerro del Moro (959 m.) And the Monte Calamorro (771 m.). However, the heights higher than 300 meters have allowed the realization of multiple mid-mountain activities as well as an intimate contact with nature. There is also a cable car that allows you to reach the highest coasts of the municipality in just 12 minutes.
Currently there is a large network of trails, more than 50 kilometers long, which allow any nature lover to spend a day (or several) walking through the mountains. In this sense, the botanical wealth of this mountain range is of great ecological interest, highlighting species such as Zahareña, Jaras, Thyme, Rosemary, Lily, Mejorana, etc. There are also typical Mediterranean mountain medium species such as juniper or cornicabra and larger species such as stone pine, carob trees and wild olive trees.
From the point of view of the fauna, it is sometimes possible to see the ibex, the genet, reptiles of various species, eagles, kestrels and even the eagle owl.
