While the history of this temple begins on the day the city was founded on August 15, 1540, its present configuration is the result of the frightening action and reaction of nature and men. Nature, and sometimes chance, turned into earthquakes and set off fires, often destroyed its walls.

The cathedral is the most important temple in the city and diocese of Arequipa for several reasons. Because it is the seat of the ecclesiastical hierarchy of the diocese: Archbishop and Metropolitan Council; because its existence is linked to the history of the city itself; because its majestic presence in the Plaza de Armas and generally in the urban landscape makes it one of the symbols of Arequipa; and because it values within its walls the faith of a historical and especially catholic and godly people, while at the same time several objects of remarkable artistic value that we have a duty to cherish and preserve.
