The village of Alte, the seat of the parish, is located in the geographical center of the Algarve, exactly on the border between Barrocal and Serra. Away from the tourist Litoral, it is considered one of the most typical and preserved villages of the Algarve.
The Rocha dos Soidos, with 482 meters of altitude, is the highest zone of the parish, having once served as reference to the navigators. From this place you can also see the whole parish. Like other parishes of the interior, Alte does not escape the rule, possessing weak economic resources and living of subsistence agriculture.
Alte has its origin in Roman occupation. The streets of the historic center retain much of their character in the whitewashed houses, in the windows and platibandas colored, in the lacy chimneys, in the surrounding tranquility.
